GTA 6 First Day Checklist

Seventeen things to sort out before and during your first night in GTA 6, for anyone coming from GTA 5. Each one links to the video where we checked it. Tick them off as you go; your ticks stay on this device.

Before November 19

  1. Rockstar says the pre-load needs up to 212 GB, more than GTA 5 (87 GB) and Red Dead 2 put together, and a day-one patch could add more. PS5 games can't run from a USB drive, so it has to go on the internal SSD or an M.2 drive. Watch, 0:16

  2. Rockstar moved pre-load up from November 12. On PS5 it opens at midnight your local time, on Xbox at midnight GMT. Start it early so you're not watching a progress bar on launch night. (Our file size video was made before the date changed.) Watch, 1:44

  3. The PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as a single-player experience, and there's no date for a new Online. Watch, 0:23

  4. The 80-hour figure is one person who knew where everything was. If you explore, you'll go past it. Watch, 4:57

Your first hour

  1. Auto-aim isn't gone, but the default lock-on behavior changed. Pick what you want before the first gunfight. Watch, 7:24

  2. Cops and enemies aren't on the minimap anymore. Thirteen years of staring at the bottom-left corner won't help. Watch, 8:38

  3. Some parked cars stay locked until you've got the right tools. A car with a driver in it is still fair game. Watch, 2:47

  4. You start with garage room for three. Buy more garages later. Watch, 3:04

GTA 5 habits to drop

  1. Get taken down carrying it, by the police or anyone else, and Nelson says you lose all of it. Find an ATM. Watch, 4:13

  2. Police remember a description, not a location. Parking in an alley doesn't change what you look like. Watch, 5:47

  3. A shotgun carried down the street causes alarm. Slung over the shoulder, less. And the weapon you were seen with goes on the police report. Watch, 1:50

  4. Two handguns and two long guns on you. Everything else stays in the car or at a hideout. Watch, 0:24

  5. Cashiers stall, shoppers fight back, and somebody might rob you first. Watch, 2:32

  6. Nelson: "Simply completing missions won't give you enough money to progress the story." Watch, 0:40

  7. Cars run on fuel now. A stolen car with a quarter tank can run dry mid-chase. Watch, 4:08

  8. Food gives buffs, gym days level you up, and skipping sleep slows recovery. Watch, 1:39

  9. Your Criminal Profile runs from professional to psycho, and Rockstar says it changes how the story unfolds. Watch, 5:58

Everything here comes from pre-release previews and interviews. We'll update it once the game is out.
